Page Intent Classification

Understanding how Spyglasses automatically classifies your pages by visitor intent

Page Intent Classification

Spyglasses automatically analyzes and classifies your website pages based on the likely visitor intent - what visitors are trying to accomplish when they land on each page. This classification helps you understand which parts of your site are driving different types of engagement.

What is Page Intent?

Page intent represents the primary goal or motivation of visitors when they access a specific page. Instead of just looking at raw page views, intent classification helps you understand:

  • What visitors are trying to do on each page
  • How different page types perform in your analytics
  • Which intents drive the most valuable traffic

How Classification Works

Spyglasses uses advanced pattern recognition to analyze:

  1. Page URLs - Path structure and naming patterns
  2. Page Titles - Title content and keywords
  3. Content Patterns - Common page structures and elements

The system automatically classifies pages when they're discovered through:

  • Sitemap imports
  • Manual page additions
  • Automatic crawling detection

Using Intent Filters in Analytics

Filtering by Intent

Instead of searching for specific pages, you can filter your analytics by intent:

  1. Click the "Filter by Intent" button in any analytics view
  2. Select one or more intents you want to analyze
  3. View aggregated data for all pages with those intents

Understanding the Data

When you filter by intent, you'll see:

  • Combined metrics for all pages with that intent
  • Performance trends for that type of content
  • Visitor behavior patterns specific to that intent

Example Use Cases

  • Pricing Intent: See how well your pricing pages convert visitors
  • Product Intent: Understand which product pages drive the most engagement
  • Support Intent: Identify if visitors are finding help effectively
  • Research Intent: Track how educational content performs

Managing Page Classifications

Automatic Classification

Most pages are classified automatically when added to your property. The system is trained on common web patterns and continuously improves its accuracy.

Manual Review

You can review and adjust classifications in your property's page management section if needed.

Bulk Operations

Use the background job system to reclassify existing pages when you want to update classifications across your entire site.

Best Practices

Instead of analyzing individual pages, look at intent groups to understand broader patterns in visitor behavior.

2. Track Intent Performance

Monitor which intents drive the most valuable outcomes for your business goals.

3. Optimize by Intent

Use intent-based insights to improve specific types of pages rather than individual URLs.

Look at how different intents perform over time to understand changing visitor needs.
